AZJILI: What RTP Actually Means, and Over What Sample Size

RTP is a rate, not a refund

Return to Player is a rate, not a promise. A JILI slot published at 97.00% RTP is built so that across the whole population of spins it will ever run, hundreds of millions of them played by everybody everywhere, ₱97 of every ₱100 staked comes back as prizes. The other ₱3 is the house edge: 3.00%. That figure is a property of the game's paytable and reel mathematics, computed by the studio and checked by the testing lab that certifies the random number generator. It is not a per-session refund, not a daily target, and not something the game owes you because it has been cold.

The confusion is between the design rate and the observed result, and the two converge painfully slowly. A ₱10 spin on a 97% game has an expected value of minus ₱0.30. Play a thousand of them and you have staked ₱10,000 and lost, on average, ₱300. But the words 'on average' are doing an enormous amount of work in that sentence, and the rest of this page is about exactly how much.

House edge in pesos: every game on one scale

RTP and house edge are the same fact stated from opposite ends: house edge equals 100% minus RTP. Convert both into pesos per ₱10,000 wagered and every game in a Philippine lobby lines up on a single scale. The ranking is not the one most players assume.

Two things jump out. First, the tie bet costs roughly fourteen times what the banker bet costs on the same shoe, at the same table, in the same hand. It is the worst commonly offered wager in the building and no amount of card-watching improves it. Second, the gap between a JILI slot's best tier at 97% and a weak one at 95% is ₱200 per ₱10,000 wagered, which is larger than the entire house edge of baccarat's banker bet. Which tier your operator has running is worth more to your bankroll than most game choices you will agonise over.

How many spins does 97% actually need?

The sample size depends on the game's standard deviation, which is the typical distance a single spin lands from its own average outcome, measured in stake units. For a medium-volatility JILI slot that figure sits around 8. The crucial asymmetry is this: the total swing over N spins grows with the square root of N, while the expected loss grows with N itself. Early on, the swing utterly swamps the edge.

The table below stakes ₱10 a spin on a 97% medium-volatility game and shows the band containing roughly two thirds of outcomes, one standard deviation either side of the mean, expressed as the RTP you would measure if you stopped counting there.

Read the first row again. After 100 spins the measured payback sits between 17% and 177% two times in three, and outside even that range the other time. After a thousand spins, about an hour of play at four seconds a spin, the band is still 72% to 122%. To pin the number to within a quarter of a percentage point you need roughly ten million spins: 463 days of continuous play without sleeping, or a little over fifteen years at two hours a day. No human player ever observes their own RTP. What you observe, always and only, is variance.

Turnover, not deposit: where the 3% is charged

The house edge is charged on turnover, meaning every peso that crosses the bet line, not on the money you deposited. Because winnings are re-staked, a small deposit generates several times its own value in turnover before it is gone. The relationship is simple: expected total turnover before a bankroll is exhausted is approximately bankroll divided by house edge.

• ₱1,000 at a 97% slot (3% edge): about ₱33,333 of turnover, roughly 3,333 spins at ₱10.
• ₱1,000 at a 95% slot (5% edge): about ₱20,000 of turnover, roughly 2,000 spins at ₱10. Same money, two fifths less play.
• ₱1,000 on European roulette (2.70%): about ₱37,037 of turnover, roughly 370 rounds at ₱100 a round.
• ₱1,000 on baccarat banker (1.06%): about ₱94,340 of turnover. The low edge buys far more table time from the identical deposit.

This is also why wagering requirements are more expensive than their headline suggests. A ₱1,000 bonus carrying a 30× requirement obliges ₱30,000 of turnover. At a 3% edge that turnover costs ₱900 in expectation, which is nearly the whole bonus; at a 5% tier it costs ₱1,500, which is more than the bonus is worth. Always convert a wagering requirement into pesos of expected cost before you accept it, and note that the conversion depends on the RTP tier you cannot see.

Why the RTP you play may not be the RTP you read

JILI ships many titles with several configurable RTP tiers and the operator's server decides which one runs. The art, the features and the paytable presentation look identical; only the long-run payback moves. You cannot infer the live tier from inside the game, and the sample-size table above explains why you could not detect a two-point difference from play even if you tried: two points is smaller than the session-to-session noise until you are well past a hundred thousand spins on that single title.

• Pair it with volatility. RTP fixes where you land after ten million spins; volatility decides whether your bankroll survives the first thousand.
• Treat every 'high RTP means it is due to pay' claim as false. Spins are independent draws and a cold streak creates no obligation whatsoever.
• Judge an operator on disclosure and licensing, not on advertised payback. A published 97% you cannot verify is worth less than a 96% you can.
